IPOH: Former MIC president Datuk Seri S Samy Vellu has made an appearance in Sungai Siput to help the Barisan Nasional (BN) wrest the Sungai Siput parliamentary constituency from the opposition and not to be the BN candidate there, Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said yesterday.

He said talk of Samy Vellu going to be the BN candidate in Sungai Siput in the next general election was mere speculation and a political game to foil the BN’s efforts to recapture the seat.

“I do not think he (Samy Vellu) has come to Sungai Siput to be the candidate. He has come to help the BN. The (candidate) talk is an attempt to foil the BN’s efforts,” he told reporters after attending a meeting with the people, here.

The menteri besar was asked to comment on the claimed preference of the Chinese community in the constituency for Samy Vellu to contest the seat as they were satisfied with his service there since 1979.

Dr Zambry, who is Perak BN chairman, said the allocation of seats in the state among the BN component parties had almost been completed.

On the scramble for the Pasir Salak parliamentary seat between Parti Keadilan Rakyat and PAS, Dr Zambry said it was the case not only in Pasir Salak but also in almost all other constituencies in Perak.

“I heard that they are also quarrelling in Pangkor,” he said, adding that all the opposition parties were eager to get to Putrajaya. — Bernama
