KUCHING: SMK Batu Lintang is beaming with pride as all its 118 STPM 2012 students passed.

The 100 per cent passing rate bettered the previous year’s figure by 1.48 per cent. There were 135 STPM students then.

Six of its students achieved four A to A minus grades. Science stream students Anton Previn Davis and Chan Jia Ching were its top students for scoring straights A’s.

Davis told The Borneo Post after the result was released yesterday that he was extremely delighted with his achievement.

“The papers were harder than expected and I was a bit worried as I was aiming for straight A’s,” he said.

The secret of his success rests in his determination and discipline.

To fully focus on his studies, Davis said he deactivated his Facebook account as it was a major distraction. He only reactivated it recently.

On private tuition, he opined that it was unnecessary for SMK Batu Lintang had dedicated teachers.

“I don’t see the point of going for tuition because our teachers were awesome. They helped me get through.”

Davis said his next move was to get an overseas scholarship from prestigious companies like Shell to pursue a degree in chemical engineering in the United States.

“Chemical engineering is an interesting field. It is constantly developing. I’ve looked at a few universities but yet to make a decision.”

Chan said he hoped to be offered a place to pursue electrical engineering in Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in Penang.

“I chose electrical engineering because I love physics.”

When asked if he would consider going overseas to pursue his degree, Chan replied: “I prefer local universities because I want to be closer to home and my family,” adding that he would most likely be working in Malaysia when he graduated.

The other high achievers are Billy Ng Chaw Ching who scored 3A and 1A-, Then Chit Siew (2A and 2A-), Jee Chun Hian (3A and 1A-) and Quratul Aini Hashim (2A and 2A-).

SMK Batu Lintang principal Saftuyah Adenan said the students fully deserved the success they attained as they had worked very hard.

The school’s media coordinator William Chai said all the teachers and principal were delighted and hugely proud of their students.
