KUCHING: Emilia Yeo Tze Ying, 18, of SMK St Thomas was overjoyed with her excellent result in last year’s STPM examination.

She obtained 4A’s.

The only child of a taxi driver, Yeo said she never expected to do so well because she had only obtained B’s for all subjects with a 3.00 overall cumulative grade points average (CGPA) during the trial examination.

“I could not believe my eyes when I learned that I got 4A’s. However, I had prayed and made efforts to pass with flying colours,” she said at the school yesterday.

She said she wanted to continue her studies at any local institutions of higher learning but her first choice is Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) – to study medicine.

Another student who also obtained 4A’s was Daniel Lim Yung Kiat. Lim said his success was due to hard work and tonnes of revisions, especially for Physics 1.

It is understood that 21 students of SMK St Thomas passed the STPM with excellent results by recording CGPA of between 4 and 3.50. A total of 119 students had sat for the examination.

Meanwhile, SMK Tun Abang Haji Openg (SMK Openg) principal Haminah Lek said the school recorded a 98.15 per cent pass rate in the STPM examination.

She said her school scored 100 per cent passes in Malay Literature and Visual Arts. There were improvements in History, Economics and Computer studies subjects.

Three art stream students, Evinati Ghani, Nadia Jumil and Halimatus Sa’adiah Yahya, each scored CGPA of 3.25, she said.

Evinati, who admitted that she is an online social networking addict, especially on Facebook, said she never expected to do well.

“I, however, had struggled hard, especially when the examination got nearer. However, I had prepared mentally and physically before sitting for the examination last year.

“There were many topics that were left out because of my last minute effort, but I am thankful I managed to get 1A, 1A-, and 2B’s. Before I went to Lower Six, I watched K-pop on YouTube a lot because I am a fan, and also played Barbie games online. My activities, however, slowed down when it was close to the examination,” she said.

Evinarti said she hoped to pursue a business course at Unimas.

Halimatus said she somehow lost hope with her studies when she was in Form Six but her teachers encouraged her and lifted her spirit.

She added that her friends, classmates, teachers and family never stopped giving her support and motivation to study hard.
