MIRI: The Election Commission is urged to install close-circuit television (CCTV) to monitor ballot boxes movement and counting time.

PAS Sarawak Deputy Commissioner III Jofri Jaraiee said by using CCTV all parties can monitor the boxes directly and can easily detect any irregularities.

“It is better to install CCTV  than to ask party agents to sleep in the lock-up,” Jofri who is also PAS Miri chief said.

Jofri was commenting on the statement by the State Election Commission (EC) Datu Takun Sunggah reported yesterday.

Takun had said that voting will be made three days in advance for the uniformed personnel and their spouses and the ballot box will be sealed and kept in a police lock-up to prevent tampering. It will only be opened during counting time.

Takun also said as there would be the risk of foul play, there could be demands from party agents to sleep over in the cell for three days.

“Let the police decide whether the party agents can sleep in the lock-up,” Jofri said.

He also said the EC must ensure that the CCTV had a backup system which will prevent the recorded data from being lost in the event of a power failure.
