KAPIT: William Ghani Bina has resigned as Sarawak Teachers’ Union (STU) president after holding the post for 21 years.

He presented his resignation letter to STU executive secretary Yong Ing Thung here recently after chairing STU’s second executive council meeting.

Ghani said he would retire as a teacher next month when he turns 58.

“I’m very thankful to STU. Without STU, nobody would know who is William Ghani Bina. Without STU, I’d be nowhere. It’s through STU that I’ve contributed towards the development of education in the country,” he said.

“At this moment, I’ve not made up my mind yet what to do but I can assure you what I do wouldn’t be less important than what I’m doing now,” he said.

Ghani would not comment on whether politics would be on the cards for him.

In June last year, Sarawak Workers Party (SWP) president Larry Sng announced Ghani as one of the party’s vice-presidents.

However, he relinquished the post three days later citing the Trade Union Ordinance, which stipulates that union officials are not allowed to hold any post in political parties.
