KUCHING: The banking industry has been with us since the dawn of trading. Over time, it has developed in line with the needs of the business environment.

WIDER CAREER PERSPECTIVE: Launching of Diploma in Islamic Banking in April last year.

WIDER CAREER PERSPECTIVE: Launching of Diploma in Islamic Banking in April last year.

Within the industry, Malaysia is one of the countries aggressively implementing Islamic Banking and Finance – currently ranking 5th globally in the Islamic finance sector after United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar.

The rise in Islamic banking institutions in Malaysia has resulted in widened career scopes in banking industry.

While a career focussing in this area is not new, the lack of professionals qualified in Islamic Banking and Finance makes graduates with qualifications specific to this field in demand.

Islamic banking is also one area in the government’s Key National Economic Area (NKEA) under the 10th Malaysia Plan’s Entry Pont Project (EPP) which aims to provide the benchmark for minimum standards in Islamic Banking and Finance education.

SPM students who have a minimum of 3 credits and would like to pursue a career in the Islamic banking industry can apply for SEGi College Sarawak’s (SEGi) Diploma in Islamic Banking (DIIB).

“Graduates with Islamic Banking qualification have a wider career perspective in both Islamic banking and conventional banking compared to graduates who only possess a conventional banking qualification,” said SEGi principal Elina Tiu.

The DIIB programme is recognised by the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) and Malaysia Qualification Agency (MQA).

SEGi is currently having their Open Day from yesterday and today (March 30 and 31) with promotions including RM500 Open Day registration and ‘A’ rebates for those who have A’s in their SPM results.

SEGi offers scholarships to SPM and STPM high achievers. Financial assistance in terms of study loans is also available.
