SIBU: The Barisan Nasional (BN) government has never been oppressive when it comes to religious practices.

Community leader Temenggong Vincent Lau said in fact Malaysia’s prosperity over the past five decades was the result of racial unity and religious freedom.

“The BN Government has never pressured the people about their religious beliefs, and the people have the right to embrace the religion of their choice,” he said on Sunday at the raffle draw which was held to raise funds for St Michael’s Church building in Sibu Jaya.

Lau said many countries clamoured to have the kind of religious freedom and racial unity prevailing in Malaysia.

Catholic Bishop of Sibu Rt Rev Joseph Hii was among those present to witness the draw at SJK Thian Hua. About RM700,000 was raised from the raffle. The church building project costs some RM5 million.
