KUCHING: Public sympathy continues to pour in for police personnel who were sent to fight armed Sulu gunmen in Lahad Datu, Sabah.

The Tabung Wira Lahad Datu-Media Prima received donations totalling RM21,200 from Dato Diraja Phui Sing Min, Temenggong Lu Kim Yong, Juma-at Ibrahim, Geomatics Survey Consultants, Sarawak Police Contingent Co-operatives and Kuching Cops Cycling Club recently.

The late DSP Michael Padel’s family was also presented with donation of RM11,000 from individuals and organisations.

His widow Jabah Mingku, 35, and his only child, Mcluie Michael, 11, were present to accept the donation during the 206th Police Memorial Day at Plaza Merdeka yesterday.

Plaza Merdeka management also presented a donation of RM2,000 to Jabah.

Michael was among six policemen killed in an ambush of security forces by Sulu terrorists in Semporna on March 2.

Meanwhile, Kuching District Police chief ACP Roslan Bek Ahmad urged the public to play their role in making the city crime free, as part of their civic responsibilities.

“Don’t just rely on the police, the public should also play their role in keeping the place crime free,” he said this at the launching of the same function.

He added that positive actions from the public in fighting crime and knowing the root causes of crime would definite help bring down the crime index.

For example, he said, home owners must not give any opportunity to criminals to break into their houses by ensuring multiple locks and the compounds brightly lit.

“Criminals will not take risks but will find other easier targets.”

A beat base was also launched for the public in case of crime as well as to forward suggestions to the police.

The shopping mall was packed yesterday with the public taking part in the various activities held during the celebration.

There were children colouring contest as well as karaoke competition.
