SIBU: Sarawak Children Cancer Society’s (SCCS) target to raise RM1.5 million from the ‘Go Bald’ Campaign to lessen the suffering of the cancer-stricken children and their parents.

“The funds raised will be used to help with the operational costs of the new SCCS Centre, to provide additional or unscheduled medical treatments and financial support as well as to attend to the general welfare of children cancer patients and their families,” head of building and fundraising committee Raymond Thong told The Borneo Post yesterday.

He said this when asked on the target sum to be raised, including its utilisation.

The new centre, costing RM2.6 million at Lot 5493, Lorong 15, Taman Desa Wira, Batu Kawa 93250, Kuching, offers improved facilities and services for these families while seeking treatment at the Sarawak General Hospital.

Each room is equipped with two single beds and attached bathrooms to ease the care for patients, he said.

On the number of patients putting up at the centre, Thong disclosed that on average, they had four patients staying there daily.

He noted there were two patients from the central region on average.

“We have, on average, 35 families staying in the centre in a year.

“The number of repeat patients varies every month depending on their condition.”

He said the completion of the two-storey building had solved the overcrowding condition and provided better living condition for parents and their cancer-stricken children.

“For years, parents had to bear with the challenging conditions at the temporary centre while their children sought treatment in Kuching,” he recapped.

He described the completion of the building as timely due to the growing number of children diagnosed with childhood cancer.

“Without the comfort and convenience of the centre, these families would be hard pressed to pay for their accommodation and food,” he lamented.

“For childhood cancer, early detection is most important as patients could be better treated,” stressed Thong.
