KUCHING: A foreign construction worker was killed in a freak incident at work when a section of a bridge launcher collapsed on top of him on Tuesday.

The incident, which also saw several other local workers sustain injuries, occurred around 4.30pm at the construction site of a new bridge in Matang.

The deceased, identified as Indradi, in his 20s, was said to have been using a machine to shift a steel frame for the bridge when a component of the equipment — said to weigh over a ton — collapsed and crushed his head.

Several local workers, who were with the victim at the time, managed to jump away from the falling component and avoid a similar fate, and sustained minor injuries to their arms and legs.

Indradi’s body was transported to Sarawak General Hospital, where doctors certified his death, while the injured received outpatient treatment later the same evening.
