Helping less fortunate Bumiputera students

SARIKEI: Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Sarawak Campus will register intakes for Pre Business Diploma (Pra Diploma Perdagangan) and Pre Science Diploma (Pra Diploma Science) offered under `Mengubah Destini Anak Bangsa’ (MDBA) programme during a mini carnival at the Sports Complex here on April 27.

UiTM Associate Professor Dr Firdaus Abdullah said the MDBA programme was aimed at helping less fortunate Bumiputera students passing with minimum grades in Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) to pursue Diploma at UiTM.

According to him, Bumiputera students from families with monthly household income of RM2,000 and below, but with credits in Bahasa Malaysia (BM) and at least three other subjects will be considered.

For the Pre Science Diploma course, the minimum requirements are credit in BM; passes with good grades in Mathematics/Additional Mathematics and English; and a pass in any science subject (Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Additional Science).

The minimum requirement for Pre Business Diploma course is credit in at least three subjects: BM, English and Mathematics/ Additional Mathematics.

The MDBA programme, which UiTM embarked on for its corporate social responsibility (CSR) since 2010, offered 500 such opportunities each semester for this category of students, Firdaus said during a joint press conference with the organiser of 1 Malaysia Patriotic Run here yesterday.

UiTM mini carnival and 1Malaysia Patriotic Run are to be held as a twin event to be officiated by Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Office (Promotion of Higher Education), Datu Len Talif Salleh at 6.30am on April 27. They are organised by Repok Community sports Club in collaboration with the Divisional Youth and Sports Office.

Firdaus called on students interested to take up Pre Diploma courses offered under UiTM’s MDBA programme to bring along certified true copies of both their parents’ and their own MyKads and birth certificates; SPM certificates or result slips; parents’ salary slips (if any) and parents’ income forms.

UiTM recruitment team will also process the applications for the MDBA programme during the carnival. Those qualified will be issued offer letters during the carnival itself.

Apart from enjoying free education, students under the MDBA programme are provided free food and accommodation as well as RM400 per month pocket money, he disclosed, adding that those who passed the final exams with a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 2.0 will be considered to pursue Diploma courses at UiTM.

MDBA students offered to pursue Diploma courses at UiTM thereafter are required to pay fees, for which they could turn to National Higher Education Fund (PTPTN) for assistance, he pointed out.

Senior UiTM lecturer Dr Abg Zainoren Abang Abdurahman who was present at the press conference said the mini carnival will put up an exhibition to showcase presentable work pieces created by its students, stage presentation, health screening, counselling
service and Sports Science workshop.

Also present was Divisional Youth and Sports officer Mohd Johari Abdullah who deliberated on the 1 Malaysia Patriotic Run which is to be held simultaneously nationwide that day.
