BUBBLING WITH ENTHUSIASM: Members of Green Road Secondary School prefectural board with their teachers and instructors during the team-building session at Kem Juara national service camp in Serian.

TOUGH GOING: The military-styled obstacle course in progress.

SIMPLY EXHILARATING: A team member trying out the flying fox.

KUCHING: Prefects from Green Road Secondary School were not overtaken by the fear of heights or flights while trying out the flying fox (zip line) during a team-building outing at Kem Juara National Service Camp in Serian recently.

And surprisingly, it was the girls who were more excited about having a go at this military-style drill (flying fox) than the boys.

One of the students, Dharaneswari, said she wouldn’t mind visiting Kem Juara again to “relive the thrills of doing the flying fox”.

“It was awesome — I would like to go again if there’s another trip like this,” enthused the Upper Six Arts 3 student.

The programme, aimed at fostering closer bonds and enhancing leadership qualities, was part of the school’s prefectural board’s calendar of events.

It included activities (like the flying box) for team-building and the camp’s obstacle course, facilitated by Arison Licha and Bujang Jimmah from Kem Juara.

“Teamwork is vital in these activities. It will motivate the participants to conquer obstacles. We are happy the prefects made the right choice by spending their day here,” Arison noted.

He also commended the prefects for displaying good team spirit in tackling the challenges and tasks in the obstacle course.

“We are happy the boys and, especially the girls, enjoyed their sessions with us,” he said on the enthusiasm shown by the prefects in completing most of the tasks in good time.

According to him, the camp had received many student groups previously but the Green Road team was one of the few that had truly enjoyed their outing.

Another prefect Abang Syafiq Amirul said although it was only for one day, the outing was a great experience for them.

“I hope more such team-building activities can be organised to strengthen the bonds among the prefects and improve their performance in carrying out their daily duties in school as well as during school functions.”

Gerald Hon from Upper Science 2 class said the outing was meaningful for him and his fellow prefects.

“I believe everyone understood the meaning and importance of teamwork when carrying out the various activities at the camp, and hopefully we can maintain this spirit of oneness wherever we are,” he said.

“To me, the outing was fun and exciting. I enjoyed the activities, especially trying out the flying fox. I would like to thank the organisers for making this trip a possibility,” Gerald said.

Meanwhile, the teacher-in-charge Evelyn Ng was confident the team-building activities had instilled team spirit and better understanding among the prefects.

The prefectural board is led by Ng (as advisor), assisted by head prefect, Kho Hing Yan, and Angel Thai, both from Upper Six Science 1 class.

Ng said the prefects must realise teamwork is important for the school’s activities to be carried out successfully.

She believes that “coming together is a beginning, keeping together is progress and working together is success” (a proverb by Henry Ford).

According to her, the prefects went home with fond memories of the outing and better understanding of each other.

“This augurs well for their role as prefects of the school,” she said.

The board members who took part in the outing were Abang, Syafiq Amirul, Alice Tang Kim Swee, Aloysius Eric Tai, Christabel Lam Pei Lin, Debra Ong Hsiang Hsiang, Dennis Liang Chen Lin, Desmond Phoo Ming Kian, Dharaneswari Ravindra, Elisha Kuan Zheng Hao, Fu Thian Luk, Gerald Hon Kar Chun, Jee Chai Sin, Jong Oi Ka, Leonard Then Lee, Liew Sim Hua, Liew Kong Ting, Lim Yee Wen, Lovelyn Huong Siew Ling, Low Fai Jing, Sara Mira Noen, Shafiqa Halimi, Sim Wei Ping, Then Mei In, Voon Yen Ching, Benjamin Lim, Benny Lim, Phua Lee Wei, Leonard Sim, Lai Yi King and Karen Su.
