Debate a joke — Chong

KUCHING: Chong Chieng Jen of the DAP, who is in a straight fight with Tan Kai of the BN in Bandar Kuching, has described Tan’s proposed debate with him as ‘A joke of the century’.

He said Tan, who is also SUPP Youth chief, had flip-flopped on the debate date, venue and topics a few times.

First, Tan wanted to debate at MBKS hall but later changed it to Travillion.

“The latest is he wants to hold it at 101 Commercial Centre. The date was first fixed on May 2 but later changed to May 4,” said Chong at a press conference here yesterday.

Chong said Tan had insisted on debating on the Hudud (Islamic law) alone.

“Lately, he changed again, and wanted to debate on something about clean and just future government.

“What is this? A child’s play? A debate with him is a waste of my time. He is not even sure of anything. I can answer his latest debate topic, which is ‘clean and just future government’, with just one sentence – change of government.”

Chong said it was obvious that Tan was not serious and not sincere about the whole thing.

In addition, having a debate on election eve was “funny timing”.

“Nobody will do that. No one will have time for that already on election eve. The news would also not be published the next day. Nobody knows about what you debated. The next morning people go to vote already.”

Chong said if Tan were serious, he should have fixed the debate much well before hand.

“With all his uncertainties, it is a waste of time to entertain such a joker.”

On a related matter, Chong said if SUPP were sincere in wanting to help the people they should answer his questions to them regarding state land and state funds.

“SUPP Youth secretary Wilfred Yaps said they would do research about it. Now I pose the questions to them to answer again.” #myvote13 #ge13
