Civil engineering contributes most to construction activity in 1Q

KUALA LUMPUR: The civil engineering sub-sector contributed the most to construction activity in the first quarter (1Q) of this year at 38 per cent.

This was followed by non-residential buildings (32 per cent), residential buildings (25.8 per cent) and special trade (4.2 per cent), the Department of Statistics Malaysia said in a statement.

The total value of construction work done in 1Q13 recorded a decrease of 5.4 per cent quarter-on-quarter to RM21.0 billion.

The percentage change year on year however, showed a significant growth of 18.4 per cent.

In terms of projects among the states, Selangor recorded the highest value of construction work done at RM4.52 billion or 21.5 per cent, it said.

This was followed by Johor at RM3.33 billion (15.9 per cent) and the Federal Territory Kuala Lumpur which recorded RM3.22 billion (15.3 per cent), Sarawak at RM1.95 billion (9.3 per cent) and Sabah posting RM1.33 billion (6.3 per cent).

The department also said the contribution of these five states accounted for 68.3 per cent of the total value of construction work done.

In terms of construction activity by project owners, the private sector continued to dominate, with an increased share from 68.4 per cent in the fourth quarter 2012, to 69.8 per cent in 1Q13. — Bernama
