KUCHING: Medan Niaga Satok has been bustling with activity in the past five months despite initial teething problems for some hawkers when it opened for business last January.

Federal Agricultural and Marketing Authority (Fama) Medan Niaga Satok unit officer Siti Khatijah Mohd Hussen revealed this when met at Medan Niaga Satok here yesterday.

According to her, Fama received numerous new applications from hawkers to trade at Medan Niaga Satok.

“Medan Niaga Satok located at Kubah Ria is divided into blocks for various types of businesses such as food and beverage, vegetables and fruits, wet items such as poultry, seafood and local favourites ‘kek lapis’ and ‘keropok’.

“Since its opening last January, business has been increasingly brisk due to promotional efforts by Fama and related agencies,” she said.

Khatijah said maintenance work on exisiting facilities at Medan Niaga Satok is in progress, made possible by an additional RM13.5 million allocation announced by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin at the recent launch of Medan Niaga Satok.

The work scope comprises construction of road, sheltered market, street lighting (Hi-Mast) as well as additional parking spaces, she said at the Fama weekly activity event organised here yesterday.

The activity, she said, aimed to promote Medan Niaga Satok to the public and introduces local fruits to children via a colouring competition.

Other activities held from 9am to 4pm yesterday include a daily quiz for visitors, kindergarten children colouring competition, local fruits eating competition and colouring competition for senior citizens.

The winners received attractive prizes of cash and hampers of Fama products.

Around 40 kindergarten children participated in the colouring competition held at Block C, Medan Niaga Satok.
