MIRI: The grand reunion dinner of SMK Marudi’s (formerly known as Marudi Government Secondary School) ex-students and ex-staff members at Mega Hotel here on Thursday brought back much fond memories.

More than 500 ex-students and ex-staff from all over the country and even overseas turned up for the event which was held in conjunction with the school’s 50th golden jubilee anniversary.

Among the dignitaries who were also ex-students were Assistant Minister of Public Utilities Datuk Sylvester Entri Muran, Baram MP Anyi Ngau, deputy state secretary Datuk Ose Murang and Ministry of Local Government and Community Development permanent secretary Datuk Dr Penguang Panggil.

The proposal for the grand reunion was first mooted after a successful gathering in Miri ten years ago but nothing was done until a handful of ex-students came together to form an organising committee to get the event going.

The programmes of the night among others included a short video presentation entitled ‘Down Memory Lane’, soliciting donation for a van for SMK Marudi, a ‘ngajat’ performance, a long dance and a Babylon dance.

Meanwhile, the school celebrated its golden jubilee at the school premises yesterday.

SMK Marudi has a humble beginning and was the first government secondary school in Baram district.

The school had its first intake of fewer than 100 students in 1963, with two Form 1 classes and one transition class.

The first batch of Form 3 students graduated in 1965 and they had to go to Miri to continue their studies.

Form 4 only started in 1967.

The school has since then grown several folds to become one of the largest government secondary schools in the state with classes up to Form 6.
