KUCHING: Organisations that received Minor Rural Project (MRP) grants must submit a simple statement of accounts after utilising them, says Assistant Minister of Infrastructure Development Datuk Daud Abdul Rahman.

“This is for the sake of accountability. Regardless of how small the amount, the government’s money must be accounted for, so it is important to furnish a statement of accounts on how the money was spent. Last year only two organisations submitted their statement of accounts to us,” Daud said when presenting MRP grants for his Tupong constituency which was held at the DUN banquet hall yesterday.

Daud said there were no need for an elaborate statement and no need for the receiving organisations to hire professional accountants to do the job.

“Just state what the money was used for and the breakdown of expenses.”

Daud also reminded organisations to have the initiative to raise their own funds.

“MRP grant is only a means, not an end. It is supplementary to what they need as the amount is usually limited, and aimed at helping to lessen the burden of organisations. In my constituency, there are many villages, schools and associations that need attention. Grants have to be distributed fairly and usually the ones needing the most will be given priority.

A total of 42 recipients, including parent-teacher associations, village committees and mosques received the MRP grants yesterday.
