Toastmasters Clubs hold youth leadership camp

KUCHING: A Youth Leadership and Communication Development Camp 2013, organised jointly by Kuching Toastmasters and STIDC Toastmasters, was recently held at the State Co-Curriculum Centre in Santubong here.

Themed ‘Get a Life, Live the Dream’ the camp was led by its organising chairman Stanley Ngu and co-organiser Salbiah Majidi.

According to a press statement, the educational camp was supported by Dana Belia 1Malaysia with the objective of developing public speaking and leadership skills among secondary school students.

Gracing the opening ceremony was the Assistant Minister of Youth Development Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

During the camp, all the 224 students were exposed to the power of teamwork through jungle trekking and a series of obstacle games.

An event ‘The Oscar Night’ was also held for students to show off their talents.

Meanwhile, in the prepared speech contest judged by both Toastmasters and students, Brian Chua became the winner with his speech ‘My family, What It Means To Me’. Chua took home the championship shield which will be under his care until the next camp.

Coming in second place was Jerry Tan with Ryan Poh in third place.

In the impromptu speech contest, Rachel Jong emerged the champion while Jay Lee clinched second place. It was also judged by both the Toastmasters and students.

Sharing third place was Michelle Kiew and Bryan Teo who was separately judged by the Toastmasters and students.
