Local claims trial to gang robbery

KOTA KINABALU: An unemployed local man claimed trial at the Sessions Court here yesterday to a gang robbery charge.

Nordin Abd Asik, 48, who appeared before judge Ummu Kalthom Abdul Samad was charged under Section 395 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of 20 years and is also liable to whipping upon conviction.

The undefended accused and an accomplice, who is still at large, was alleged to have robbed a 39-year-old man of a motorbike at Kampung Berungis, Tuaran at 2pm on May 12.

The court set June 28 for the case management and released the accused on RM8,000 bail with two local sureties pending disposal of the case.

In a separate case, Filipino Ismail Jamiri, 32, was sentenced to four months in jail and ordered to be whipped twice for entering the state illegally.

He was caught after failing to produce any valid travel document at the city area on May 23.

He pleaded guilty to the charge framed under Section 6 (1) (c) of the Immigration Act which provides for a fine not exceeding RM10,000, or a jail term of up to five years, or both, and with whipping, upon conviction.

The judge also ordered him to be referred to the Immigration Department after serving his sentence for further action.
