Salahuddin Abang Barieng

KUCHING: Head of State Tun Datuk Pat inggi Abang Muhammad Salahuddin Abang Barieng yesterday urged the people to accept and respect the May 5 general election results.

He said the people had given the mandate to the BN to remain in power through a democratic process.

“The election is over and the people have made their choice through a democratic process, so the result must be respected and accepted.

“The people should not get carried away by negative elements that can affect our unity and harmony,” he said in his Gawai Dayak message.

Salahuddin stressed that the people must learn from some foreign countries which are embroiled in chaos and riots due to political and religious differences.

Such situations, among others, would impede the economy and development process, he cautioned.

“We cannot allow such situations to happen in the state and country. We must maintain our solidarity, peace and harmony to face many challenges that shall come our way.”

Urging the people to be patriotic and avoid getting distracted by negative elements that could destroy peace and harmony, Salahuddin believed that the state and country would continue to remain strong.

He also urged the people to contribute towards the prosperity of the state and country, adding that the role of everybody was important.

On the prevailing peace, harmony and tolerance among the various races and religions, Salahuddin said the people must treasure and preserve them.

“We should be thankful that we are able to live happily and peacefully among the various races and religions, and this we must maintain because it has been the pillars of our strength and development.

“We should not allow differences in our political ideologies, race and religion to wreck our unity and harmony.”
