Spending another Gawai in the dark

POWER PLEASE: Nacha and her granddaughter sit in their house illuminated only by candlelight.

SIBU: Single mother Nacha Payu of Rumah Joseph Jarrau, Tanjung Berkakap and her family will celebrate another Gawai Dayak in the dark.

Nacha, 68, said this is because there is still no power supply to her house.

“The meter is not there though there is a cable connecting my house and the roadside power pole,” she lamented.

Nacha, who lives with her son and a granddaughter, said her house was built  about four years ago and was later improved under the Housing Assistance Programme in 2010.

Wiring work was completed under the Rural Electrification Scheme (RES) this year.

However, although neighbouring houses have already been lit up, Nacha’s remains without power.

Nacha said initially she paid RM20 a month to have power supplied to her house from a neighbour’s, but that arrangement ended when overloaded cables nearly caused a fire.

Her predicament is shared by the 11-door Rumah Dango Nugai, located not far from her house.

The longhouse, built about five years ago, has also yet to receive electricity supply.

Wiring work for the longhouse was also completed early this year.
