Pakistani jailed for assaulting wife

KOTA KINABALU: A Pakistani man who pleaded guilty in the Magistrate Court here yesterday to a charge of assaulting his wife by throwing ice cubes at her was jailed for seven months.

Zaheer Younas, 30, was charged before magistrate Cindy Mc Juce Balitus under Section 323 of the Penal Code which provides for a maximum jail term of one year and a fine, upon conviction.

Zaheer admitted to causing hurt to his wife, aged 44, at a house in Sepanggar on Jan 25.

The court also ordered the accused to be referred to the Immigration Department after serving his jail term for further action.

Prosecuting officer Inspector Azaman Hamat told the court that police investigations revealed that Zaheer and his wife were having a marital dispute prior to the attack.

The complainant was admitted to hospital twice because of injuries caused by the accused.

On both occasions, she refused to cite domestic abuse for her injuries to the hospital staff as the accused had threatened her.

According to the complainant medical report read in court, she suffered injuries and mental disturbances due to Zaheer behaviour.

Prosecuting officer Inspector Azaman Hamat urged the magistrate to impose an appropriate sentence.

In the same court yesterday, a group of four men was jointly charged with breaking into a house and stealing items from it.

Lee Chiang Seng, 37, Leonard Soon Kin Fung, 33, Yong Siew Fui, 37 and Teo Chee Siung, 40, however denied breaking into a home in Kg Mansiang, Menggatal on 23 May this year.

They are liable to a maximum jail of 14 years and a fine or whipping if found guilty under Section 457 of the Penal Code.

The charge stated that the accused persons broke into the house and stole an LCD television set, various electronic items, including laptops, mobile phones, a lawnmower and jewellery.

The court set June 28 this year for their trial and granted the accused bail.
