DIRECT COMMUNICATION: MCC attending to the public at the meet-the people session.

MIRI: The meet-the people session organised by the Miri City Council (MCC) on every first Friday of the month, has succeeded in getting the public to work closely with the council in enhancing the quality of its services.

MCC spokesperson said through such sessions, the council would be able to know the aspirations of the people and problems needed to be addressed immediately.

The issues brought up during these meetings included dissatisfaction over scavenging services, repair of drains and roads.

“Today alone, we received nine complaints during the meet-the people’s session. Five of the cases were on drainage, three on road repair and we also received one joint letter from hawkers trading at Saberkas Commercial Centre to improve services in their trading areas. These included electricity supply, and cleanliness of the area,” a spokesperson for the council told reporters yesterday.

An average of 10 complaints were received during the meet-the people session. It was introduced in 2009, as part of MCC’s efforts to improve the quality of services to the people.

During the meet-the people session held from 9am to 11am, all the sectional heads of the council were present to attend directly to public complaints or queries. At times, the mayor and secretary of the council would also be present.

Members of the public can also channel their grievances or views to the public relation office of the council, or to the councillors who will bring the matters for discussion during the monthly full council meetng.
