MIRI: Pustaka Miri has lined up several activities for the community in and around the city this month.

This Saturday, the library together with Miri Local Agenda 21 (LA21) will be holding this year’s ‘Knowledge Camp’ in Hamidah Welfare Complex which will also involve orphans as participants.

Among the activities at the camp will be morning exercise, an information literacy skills session, a recycling workshop as well as creativity enhancement and mentoring sessions, Pustaka Miri public relations officer Sofina Tan said yesterday.
Meanwhile on the same day, Pustaka Miri’s Outreach Team will join the Women and Family Development Council of Telang Usan and Danawa Resources Sdn Bhd in holding the Community ICT Literacy Programme at Long Laput, Baram.

Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau is expected to declare the event open.

“The community in Long Laput will have the opportunity to learn basic skills in information and communication technology (ICT) as the organisers will teach them ways to communicate via email and social networking,” Tan added.

On top of that, there will also be a Creative Fingers Workshop for those with special needs and in the evening, children and adults alike can attend a movie screening during Pustaka Miri’s ‘Movie Under The Stars’ session.
Next Saturday (June 22), villagers in Kampung Bakam will be able to join in educational fun brought specially by the library and Miri LA21 as they once again join hands to hold the ‘Lan Berambeh’ programme.

Educational activities such as talks on education, the environment and health will be lined up for the day apart from games and lucky draw sessions as well as a library membership drive.

The main purpose of the programme is to reach out to the community with knowledge sharing and lifelong learning activities.

Meanwhile, on June 27, a prize giving ceremony for the Local Content Competition and Home Library Competition 2013 will be held in the library’s auditorium. Both competitions took place earlier this year.

The Local Content Competition aimed to expose secondary school students to the many resources and information available as well as to learn the correct way of presenting facts in their projects.

Each team, which comprises a maximum of four students, carried out a research on a topic and compiled the findings of the provided topic. This year’s theme was Herbs and Plants in the Local Community of Sarawak.

As for the Home Library Competition, it was for Malaysians residing in Miri who have a library or reading corner in their homes. The competition was divided into two categories – Village Houses and Housing/Residential Area.
