BINTULU: A 28-year-old passenger of a 4WD vehicle (Toyota Hilux) was killed on the spot when the vehicle he was in collided with an oil palm-laden lorry somewhere on the Bintulu-Bakun road about 5pm Monday.

The drivers of the two vehicles escaped with only minor injuries.

According to sources the driver and the victim in the Hilux were on their way to Bintulu sending some stuff belonging to their company for repair while the lorry was coming from the opposite direction.

The impact of the collision sent the lorry careening on its side dragging the 4WD for several metres in process and killing instantly the passenger who was also trapped in his seat.

The driver (of the Hilux) managed to crawl out of the wreckage with the help of a passer-by. Together, they pulled the trapped victim out of his seat but he was already dead.

The lorry driver, believed to be an Indonesia, fled the scene.

Fire and Rescue Department personnel arrived at the scene a few minutes later after being informed of the incident.

The body was later sent to Bintulu Hospital for post-mortem.
