KUCHING: A total of RM45,000 was raised from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Alumni Golf Charity Tournament yesterday to fund the university’s `Change the destiny of our children’ (MDAB) programme.

The golfers managed to raise a total of RM20,000 on their own, Teguh Amani Sdn Bhd donated RM10,000, while Minister of Social Development Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom, who officiated at the event at Sarawak Golf Club, announced an allocation of RM15,000 from his ministry.

Ninety-five alumnus from all over the country participated in the charitable event to support the MDAB programme which is aimed at helping bright SPM students from hardcore poor families pursue their tertiary education with UiTM.

The fully-sponsored MDAB programme at UiTM Kota Samarahan campus offers a choice of Pre-Science and Pre-Commerce diploma programmes. Those accepted into the programme would be given hostel accommodation and RM400 per month food and study allowance for the duration of the programme.

“The programme offers a chance for those from hardcore poor families to pursue higher education. MDAB helps to improve students in subjects such as English and Mathematics to aid their preparation for admittance into diploma programmes.

“We are grateful for your participation today. With alumnus coming from throughout the country and Brunei, this has truly made this tournament a 1Malaysia event,” said UiTM Sarawak rector Prof Dato Dr Jamil Hamali at the prize giving ceremony.
