KUCHING: Welfare workers of the Muslim faith should make full use of Quran recital and Nasyid competitions to increase awareness and understanding of their responsibilities, while strengthening their trustworthiness as welfare providers.

Welfare, Women and Family Development Minister Datuk Fatimah Abdullah said they should also use lessons from the Quran as guidance and guideline.

“Wasatiyah (humility and moderation) is very much important in leadership and welfare management in creating an excellent work culture and ethic as social workers. Wasatiyah means equally divided, fair, good and moderate between two parties.

“Practising equality would ensure honesty and righteousness. Using this understanding as a guideline in welfare management for those in need must be based on the principle of fairness, efficiency, humanity and gratitude,” said Fatimah in her speech at the Welfare Department’s state-level Quran recital and Nasyid competitions at Samarahan correctional facilities near here recently.

Winners of the competitions will represent the state at the Welfare Department’s national Quran recital and Nasyid competitions at Universiti Malaya on Aug 24-28.

Meanwhile, two students from Sekolah Tunas Bakti Kuching who won first and third places in the Boys Open (13 to 18 years old) category of the state-level completion will represent the state in the national-level Quran recital competition. An employee of the school will also represent the state in the Men’s Open category and another student will compete in the Nasyid category after coming tops in the state-level competitions.

Taman Seri Puteri Kuching also fared well in the competition, winning first and second places in the Girls’ Open (13 to 18 years old) category. One of its employees finished third in the Women’s Open category while another student took second place in the Nasyid category.
