KUALA LUMPUR: Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB), a non-profit company established by the Sarawak state government, is eyeing to secure 45 bid wins for 2013.

The bureau is on track to maintain last year’s bid success rate of 80 per cent, having secured 22 international conferences so far this year.

These events are expected to welcome 7,411 delegates with an estimated direct delegate expenditure of RM14.7 million from 2013-2019.

In a statement yesterday, SCB managing director Mike Cannon said: “Sarawak is rapidly gaining popularity as an international meetings’ destination, and SCB has a significant amount of returning clients bidding for new events in the state.”

Kuching shares the 38th spot with Colombo, Chennai, Ho Chi Minh, Jakarta and Tel Aviv under the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) Asia Pacific and Middle East city ranking, bettering the performance of cities like Canberra, Nagoya, Chengdu and Osaka.

The ICCA statistics report is the global benchmark for international association convention business and also serves as sales and marketing resource for future targets. — Bernama
