Errant customers will be brought to court — Sesco

KUCHING: Sesco will continue to file more cases in court if customers fail to settle their arrears.

A press statement, received here yesterday, was issued in response to recent statements in the papers claiming that Sesco did not dare to bring (errant) customers to court and that discounts were given when a case was challenged in court.

The statement said this was not true and incomplete It said that it had so far filed 98 cases in court to recover the arrears which were derived from meter inspection operations.

An unnamed spokesperson said that there was strict no-discount policy in the arrears recovery process.

He urged customers who have received arrears letters to approach them (Sesco) for clarification, and if they claimed that the arrears were too high, Sesco would view the evidence and listen to their (customers) argument.

He added that recent statements made by certain elected political representatives only complicated the issue. He added that they should check with Sesco before making statements in support of stealing power.

“Every (arrears) bill issued to our customers will be attached with a letter explaining clearly the irregularities detected and the person to approach if in doubt.

“Sesco has arrears appeal process in place where customers can come and discuss.

“In the arrears appeal interview, customers will be told how the amount is calculated and photo of irregularities will be shown.

“If customers can give valid reasons and relevant documents to prove that the amount should be revised Sesco will review the case. When the arrears are revised, this is not a discount but based on genuine facts provided by the customers and approved by the arrears appeal committee,” he said.

The public can continue to report any power theft related matters through Sesco hotline at 082-443535. All information will be kept highly confidential.
