SIBU: The management of SM Wong Nai Siong has been advised to ensure its education system match up with the Malaysian mainstream education system.

Honorary advisor to the school’s management board, Dato Henry Lau, in giving the advice said it was important that the school adopt all the good things in the mainstream education system.

Speaking at a dinner in Tanahmas Hotel here Wednesday, Lau said that being in the mainstream (of education) was better for the school.

The dinner was held to inaugurate the new office-bearers of the school management board as well as to bid farewell to the retiring principal Timothy Ngu.

Urging the school to sustain its close rapport with the Chinese community, Lau pledged to continue to assist in the development of the school.

According to him, his father the late Dato Sri Lau Hui Kang, had always been fond of Wong Nai Siong School and its development, and had talked about it a lot.

He said his father knew that the school had many problems despite the management board doing its best to make sure that the school would thrive.

After his father passed away, he took over the responsibility of helping the school.

“We have set up a higher education foundation to help students, especially those from financially-disadvantaged families.

“The foundation is not only used to support the school, but to promote Chinese education,” he said.

Lau said there was still room for improvements in the school especially in areas of quality teachers, teaching facilities and the level of cooperation from the Chinese community here.

Management board chairman Vincent Lau Lee Ming and Sibu Municipal Council chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King were among the dignitaries present at the dinner.
