Bazaar vendors say no to Styrofoam

SIBU: Vendors at the Sibu Town Square Ramadan Bazaar have supported the Sibu Municipal Council’s (SMC) call not to use Styrofoam containers.

One vendor said she hoped customers would not mind using other materials to wrap their food.

“If we use paper to wrap the food, of course it won’t be as practical as using the Styrofoam container.

“But, for the sake of health and the environment, we support using containers that are less detrimental to the environment and health,” she said yesterday.

Another vendor also said she supported SMC’s no Styrofoam stance.

“I’m glad to be an integral part of the environmentally friendly move,” she said.

SMC secretary Hii Chang Kee said the move to stop using Styrofoam containers began with the Borneo Cultural Festival (BCF).

“The council propagates ‘No to Styrofoam’, but has not insisted that Styrofoam containers be rejected,” he said.

Hii was happy to note that vendors are using other types of containers.

“We just hope that the trend will continue,” he said, adding that customers have also been cooperative.

On cleanliness, he said littering during the BCF and the Ramadan Bazaar was not as bad as in previous years.
