KANOWIT: Ngemah assemblyman Alexander Vincent has urged the relevant authority to replace the water pipes in three former Rajang Area Security Command (Rascom)  resettlement areas here – Nanga Tada, Nanga Ngungun and Nanga Jagau.

He said the pipes were old and could no longer handle high water pressure due to increasing demand, serving a population of 7,000.

“I have been receiving complaints from the residents about water shortage in their areas.

“They told me that burst water pipe is the main cause of the problem and it has happened frequently,” he said after officiating at the new jetty for Rumah Kubu Sandom in Nanga Tada here recently.

The pipes, he said were built in the early 1980s and need to be replaced.

He also urged the authority concerned to check the newly installed electricity meters and rewiring in the three areas.

“Residents are also complaining about this matter,” he said.

According to Councillor Bunut Kubu, the water woes in Nanga Tada had been causing inconvenience to longhouse dwellers in the area.

Citing a latest incident, she said the water supply to their longhouse was just back to normal about two weeks ago after the pipe in the area burst before Gawai Dayak.

“During the period, we had to buy drinking water in Sibu Jaya while for washing, we collect river and rainwater,” she said.

Nanga Tada has 16 longhouses, Nanga Ngungun 24 longhouses and Nanga Jagau 21 longhouses.

Penghulu Ugap Seribu, Penghulu Barnabas Angkis, Penghulu Juin Adan, Councillor Berawang Limban and Tuai Rumah Kubu Sandom were also present.

Rumah Kubu jetty was built and completed last year at a cost of RM30,000 and implemented under ‘Basic Infrastructure Project’.
