Call to reignite the ‘gotong royong’ spirit

KUCHING: Urban youths were yesterday encouraged to be actively involved in gotong-royong activities and reignite the ‘working together’ spirit within the community.

Saberkas organising secretary Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi who is also Pantai Damai assemblyman in making the call, said it was important for city youths to participate in gotong-royong activities.

“As frequently demonstrated in the olden days, such activities would strengthen ties among the people,” he said at the Saberkas-Bernas distribution of ‘bubur lambuk’ and ‘bubur pedas’ roadshow at Surau Darul Hijrah in Bandar Baru Semariang near here yesterday.

“This roadshow which is into its 10th year encourages youths to work with their community the gotong-royong way in preparing ‘bubur lambuk’ and ‘bubur pedas’ for the people.”

Dr Abdul Rahman also called on the youths from as young as 16 years old to join Saberkas whether at branch or unit level, “in line with the movement’s objective to empower youths and enable them to make significant contribution to the nation-building process.

This year, the Saberkas-Bernas roadshow will be held at 25 locations throughout the state. The final stop will be at Gedong on Aug 5.

The roadshow was launched by Saberkas president Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg at Taman Sri Wangi here last week.

Bernas sponsors RM50,000 and rice for the programme which is also held in collaboration with the Youth and Sports Department.

Also present at the distribution yesterday were Saberkas executive secretary Izzuan Haironi, PBB Pantai Damai branch deputy chairman Madehi Mas, state Bernas manager Kamri Abdul Rauh and surau committee chairman Osen Bujang.
