KOTA KINABALU: The Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism Ministry is encouraged to set up a collection centre for heavy vehicles to refuel diesel in order to prevent fuel shortage or traffic congestion at petrol stations.

Community Development and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Jainab Ahmad Ayid, who proposed this yesterday, said the shortage of diesel and traffic congestion at petrol stations were mainly caused by heavy vehicles coming to refuel their tanks.

“A collection centre could allow these heavy vehicles to have their own time refuelling. Petrol stations could perhaps segregate the area for refuelling of normal vehicles and heavy vehicles to avoid congestion,” she suggested after conducting spot checks at petrol stations around Inanam yesterday

She added that the current procedures need to be reviewed to show the people that the government is serious in wanting to resolve the problem.

Jainab was commenting on the statement by LDP deputy president Senator Datuk Chin Su Phin who called on  Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob to step down for failing to resolve diesel supply problem in the state.

“Diesel shortage in Sabah is a problem that affects all of us and this is where collective effort must be made together. The minister is still relatively new to the job, so give him more time to resolve this problem.

“The minister is expected to be here today to look at our situation and hopefully he can resolve this problem,” said Jainab.

Also present yesterday was Jainab’s assistant minister, Anita Baranting.
