GENEVA: Authorities have launched an investigation into Monday’s train collision in western Switzerland, which left some 40 people injured, Xinhua News quoted local reports.

Experts from the Swiss accident investigation authority have been on site at the exit of the Granges-pres-Marnand train station in the western Canton of Vaud, where two trains collided head-on around 7 pm local time.

The two trains should have crossed at the small station, officials said. It is unclear whether there was any delay or earlier departure of the trains.

The crashed engines of the trains were wrapped together at the site.

Rescue workers were continuing their search for one of the drivers, who was out of contact since the crash.

Special equipment and a heavy crane had been brought in to help get to the crushed train cabinet faster and clear the wreckage of the trains.
