KOTA KINABALU: Sabah is second to the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur in the number of PPR (Program Perumahan Rakyat) projects implemented by the Barisan Nasional government.

According to Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan, a total of 20,449 units of houses had been built in Sabah through 28 projects.

Abdul Rahman said 15 projects with a total of 13,256 low-cost houses had been completed while 12 other projects with 6,235 units are still in the construction process.

“One more project with 958 units is in the planning stage,” he said in a statement yesterday.

“Sabah has the second highest number of PPR in the country after Kuala Lumpur which has implemented 34,862 units of PPR followed by Johor with seven PPR projects involving 8,278 units of houses,” the Kota Belud member of parliament said.

He added that this reflected the federal government’s strong commitment to the people in Sabah in providing sufficient number of affordable houses.

“Sabah remains an important state to the Barisan Nasional (BN) government and we will continue to identify specific measures to increase the well-being of the people in the state,” Abdul Rahman stressed.

The PPR was set up with the aim to provide those in the low income group and local squatters who are resettled with housing facilities for rent or sale, especially in main city areas.

Those targeted are families earning less than RM2,500 and local squatters. The PPR, which is equipped with public infrastructure, can be rented at a rate of RM124 a month or sold at RM42,000 each in Sabah.

Selection is based on open registration and the list of squatters identified by the state government.
