Three road accidents in the span of 16 hours

SIBU: Three road accidents, involving two fatalities, occurred within a 16-hour span during the Hari Raya holidays.

The two deceased were identified as longhouse chief Usit Rengkai, 49 , who died on the spot and Manbang Lambat, 82.

The first accident occurred on Friday at Sungai Buloh in Balingian when Manbang’s car carrying four others collided with another car.

Manbang from Tatau died in the accident at 7pm.

Another victim of the accident, 30-year-old Rima, broke her left knee and injured her chin and forehead.

Her one-year-old daughter, Mary, injured her head on the right side while her son Nickson, 7, fractured his right shoulder.

The fourth victim, a man named Igut, 49, fractured his right wrist and broke two ribs. He also injured his right chest.

The driver from the other car, Mat Sampei, 47, from Bintulu fractured his left thigh while a passenger escaped unhurt.

Ambulance from Sibu Hospital sent the injured persons to a clinic in Selangau before they were referred to the Accident and Emergency Unit of Sibu Hospital.

The second and third accidents occurred 15 hours later at Mile 10 Sibu-Bintulu Road and KM52 Julau-Kanowit Road.

The second accident occurred at around 10.30am yesterday and involved two cars and a four-wheel-drive vehicle.

A driver of a Proton Wira travelling to Bintulu lost control of his car as it was raining causing it to skid and collided head-on with a Perodua Myvi from the opposite direction.

The driver of the 4WD travelling behind the Perodua Myvi said he could not brake in time and crashed into the two cars.

Both the cars were badly damaged on the front while the 4WD was also damaged on the front but only lightly.

A couple in the Perodua Myvi were pinned to their seats as a result but their one-year-old daughter and tow-year-old son were helped out of the wrecked car by passers-by.

Traffic police sent the two children to hospital.

A Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) team arrived later to extricate the couple from the car.

The 27-year-old mother from Kampung Sentosa Salim fractured her right arm while the father, also 27, injured his head and neck.

Though the daughter sustained injury on the face and the son injured his forehead, they were conscious when they arrived at Sibu Hospital.

The 28-year-old driver of the Proton Wira, who was also sent to hospital in an ambulance, injured his left leg.

The 4WD driver was not hurt in the accident.

The third accident occurred also around 10.30am yesterday in which longhouse chief Usit from Sungai Arip, Balingian perished.

Usit together with six others had attended a wedding ceremony at Ulu Kanowit the previous night.

The seven, including a woman, from three families, were travelling back home in a 4WD when the 4WD skidded and flipped over several times before coming to a halt.

Usit died on the spot from severe head injuries.

Bomba from Kanowit who arrived at 11.15am extricated his body from the car.

It was said that two of the seven persons who sat in the cargo compartment at the back were thrown off the 4WD.

Ambulance from Julau sent four injured persons to Kanowit Hospital while two others were sent to a clinic in Julau by Rescue 991.

Police from Sibu also arrived at the scene to send the body of Usit to the mortuary.
