Sept 1 Dogathon to turn strays from pests to pets

CHANGE OF FATE: Paws’ mission is to rescue the strays and give them a new life.

MIRI: The ‘healthy’ resort city of Miri can be one of contrasts, where stray dogs roam the concrete prairies, until ‘Paws’ can lay its hands on them.

The many strays can be an eyesore while it is even more pathetic to see them run over by traffic. The occasional carcass is another repugnant tale, where the stench near food outlets can be nauseating.

So what can be done to keep these innocent canines off the street, reduce their numbers andrescue them from public wrath?

With these in mind, a voluntary charitable organisation ‘Piasau Animal by Welfare Support’ or ‘Paws’ in short was mooted in a charity effort called ‘Dogathon’ to be held in the city on Sept 1.

What exactly is ‘Dogathon’? It is an event where the owners stroll with their furry friends to raise funds for stray dogs in Miri. Hence, a word of ‘thanks’ to Paws for the meritorious move.

The Dogathon is slated to begin at 10.30am from the starting point at Miri Civic Centre to the finishing line at Ming Cafe hereand in between have short breaks for drinks and group photo shoots.

Later, Miri Mayor Lawrence Lai will join participants to walk back to Miri Civic Centre, where he will grace the opening ceremony of a ‘2013 Paws Doggie Show’.

“Anyone with a dog is eligible to enter the show, and participation fee is RM10 (RM30 plus a T-shirt),” a Paws spokesperson said.

To register, get entry forms from Paws & Claws Clinic or Angel Clinic (016-8515060) or email [email protected].

There will be other interesting side activities to make the Dogathon a grander mission like musical chairs, obedience, feeding and dress-up competitions.

What about stray cats?

That’s another story.
