DAP to hold fresh cec elections, says Karpal

KUALA LUMPUR: The DAP will hold fresh Central Executive Committee (CEC) elections to avert deregistration of the party, said chairman Karpal Singh.

In a statement here yesterday, he said the matter was resolved last night, despite the DAP’s strong legal position that the directive of the Registrar of Societies (ROS) for the party to hold fresh CEC elections did not have sanctity or authority of law.

He said the party made every effort to receive from ROS, the reasons for their directive and the law on which the directive was based.

DAP’s repeated requests to the ROS to be supplied with complaints lodged against the party had been futile, noted Karpal.

Karpal said the CEC from the term 2008-2011 would meet up next Thursday to make the necessary preparations for fresh elections.

On July 30, ROS ordered DAP to hold its CEC election again, saying it was not satisfied with the explanation given by the party on the issue of voting irregularities and manipulation involving 547 delegates during the previous party’s CEC election on Dec 15. — Bernama
