KUCHING: Padiberas Nasional Berhad (Bernas), with cooperation from the state and central government, will further develop the Batang Lupar area in Sri Aman into a rice bowl with modern padi planting methods.

Sarawak Housing and Tourism Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg said as a result of Bernas research and development involving new technology, the project to widen the existing padi planting will help farmers produce rice for the local and foreign markets.

“Padi is a security crop and Bernas has come up with new technology to produce it as a food basket,” he said at the 2013 Sarawak Bernas Aidilfitri function here last night.

Earlier, Sarawak Bernas Chief Executive Officer Mohd Kamaluddin Mohd Effendie said besides managing the business of staple food and encouraging the development of the local padi and rice industry, Bernas emphasised on sharing prosperity and giving back to the people through various social corporate responsibility programmes.

He is now appointed as the political secretary to Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Nancy Shukri. — BERNAMA
