MIRI:  The prevailing peace and harmony in Malaysia has enabled Shell Malaysia to gain much growth in the country.

“Miri especially, is very special to us, as this is where Shell set its footing 103 years ago.  We do not have any intention to exit this wonderful city.  In fact, Miri will continue to be our upstream base and head office for Shell Malaysia Exploration and Production (SMEP),” said SMEP Hari Raya Aidilfitri Open House joint hosts Siti Sulaiman and Jalal Abu Bakar on Friday night.

Siti (Sabah Asset general manager) and Jalal (general manager commercial) made the remarks in their joint press statement which was released to the press at the function.

Among those present at the function were the Assistant Minister of Communications Datuk Lee Kim Shin, SSB/SSPC managing director and Shell Malaysia chairman Iain Lo and his wife  Josephine Kueh, Miri Resident Antonio Kahti Galis and Miri Housing Group of Companies group executive chairman Datuk Lau Siu Wai.

Siti and Jalal said there had been many exciting developments which will keep Shell busy, adding that last year, several production sharing contracts (PSC) were signed with Petronas, mostly for gas exploration in Sarawak.

“We are optimistic we will be able to support the country’s growing demand for gas through these fields.

We are also growing our upstream business particularly in deepwater in Sabah and with all these developments, we expect to be here for a long time,” they said.

Earlier touching on the Hari Raya celebration, Siti said Hari Raya celebrations give the people an opportunity to indulge in food.

“But more than that, Hari Raya open house give us the opportunity to renew and strengthen friendships across all ethnic communities.

Typically for Hari Raya, many Muslims and even non Muslims return to their family home or fondly call balik kampong. For me and also Jalal, this is something we look forward to every year to go back to Kuching, as both of us are from Kuching,” said Siti.

During the function, apart from being treated to various foods and drinks like ketupat, rendang, satay, lemang and dodol, the over 1,000 Shell staff, family and friends were also entertained to various entertainment programmes including songs by local artistes Bob AF and Irwan Dasri.

Duit raya was presented to the 37 orphans from Rumah Amal Anak-Anak Kesayangan Kami.
