He said those who are leading sports bodies had put themselves one level higher than others as they have to carefully arranged their time.

At the same time Lamat called on sports leaders to be more efficient and move effectively to enhance its roles in the development of the sports at the grassroots level, to recruit new talents to be taken to represent Bintulu in any sports discipline.

Sports leaders he said should not only focus on high performance sports but also need to promote mass sports which is the sport for fitness and health.

Many health problems can be avoided by engaging in sports activities as well as increase the value of cooperation and solidarity among all races and religions in the division, he said.

In addition, the course participants he said should understand the concept of ‘good governance’ so that the body can be properly managed with better and effective governance that can contribute to the development of sports in the country and Sarawak in particular.

“Sports leaders should be in the forefront in implementing the direction of sports development in the state,” he said adding that sports development programmes must be intensified.

In the meantime, he challenged the sports leaders in the division to make Bintulu as a hub in producing quality athletes that can represent the country.

He pointed out that this can be achieved with a strong spirit and cooperation between the state government and relevant sports bodies, by 2016 Sarawak will be the host for the 16th Malaysia Games (Sukma).

“This opportunity should be taken to boost the Sarawak as a sports powerhouse in Malaysia.

New sports that have long resided in Peninsular Malaysia such as water polo, wrestling, hockey, surfing, wall climbing, radio remote control, cruise, dodgeball and woodball should also be introduced in the state.

“These sports should be promoted at the primary school level and this role should be played by fans and sports enthusiasts,” he said.
