KUCHING: A senior citizen received 11 stitches on his head after he was slashed during a robbery in his room at a budget hotel here on Tuesday night.

The 78-year-old from Sibu, who has been here for the past two weeks accompanying his terminally-ill wife at the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH), had just returned to his room around 7.15pm to take a shower when he heard a knock on the door.

Upon opening the door, he was confronted by a machete-wielding man who slashed him on the head and tried to force his way into the room.

Despite being injured, the septuagenarian was still able to push the door to prevent the robber from entering, leading the latter to grab the victim’s mobile phone from his hand and flee down the corridor.

Following the incident, the victim sought the help of staff at the reception counter to call the police and later sought treatment at SGH for the slash wound to his head.

A source disclosed security camera footage showed the suspect arriving at the hotel lobby with another male, who loitered in the area while the suspect went upstairs and later fled together with him as well.

In an unrelated incident, a housewife was forced to surrender her valuables after two armed robbers broke into her house at Taman Sukma early yesterday.

The 58-year-old woke up from sleep around 2am after hearing noises coming from the kitchen and upon getting up to check, came across two masked men armed with a machete.

She was immediately threatened at knife-point and was forced to hand over RM50 in cash, a gold ring and her mobile phone to the pair, who then fled out from the back door.

A police report of the incident has been lodged and the case is being investigated.
