BAGAN DATOH: Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi yesterday lashed out at quarters for alleging that he would contest the deputy president’s post at the party election this October.

“They are insane,” he told reporters after the Perak 1Malaysia Squad gathering with the minister here yesterday.

He was commenting on a report in a news portal, Free Malaysia Today (FMT) saying that whispers of Ahmad Zahid going for the deputy president’s post have started to surface in the towns of Sabah.

According to the report, certain Sabah Umno groups claimed that Ahmad Zahid might challenge deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin for the post at the Umno general assembly in October.

Ahmad Zahid, who is Home Minister, said he would however defend the vice-president post which he currently held. — Bernama
