MIRI: Communication Assistant Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin yesterday reminded organisations and bodies to be genuine when applying for assistance such as government grants.

Lee who is also Assistant Minister of Sports said: “Don’t ask simply because someone else gets what they asked for from the government. But be genuine and sincere in your request.”

Earlier, Lee who is also Senadin assemblyman received a courtesy call from a group representing Iban Methodist Church who appointed him patron of a fundraising dinner to build their new church.

The Methodist Church group received an acre of land in Lutong for that purpose.

“They should utilise it within two years after the land was given to them. Not leave it idle for years as that could raise doubts on the real reason they ask for it,” said Lee.

“The government’s gesture in giving them land to build a church proves it advocates religious freedom,” he said.

It also shows the government acknowledges the role of religious bodies in human capital development, particularly in spiritual and mental development.

According to chairman of Iban Methodist Church Miri, Chris Bundan, they had to do earth-filling first. The church estimated to cost around RM2 million is expected to be completed in 2015. It would consist of administration office, church proper, youth ministry, Sunday class and kindergarten.

The committee will hold fundraising activities including seeking financial assistance from other Methodist churches, corporate bodies and individuals.

Currently the group is using a shoplot in Lutong Baru to hold church services, activities and programmes.
