Performances mark Head of State’s 92nd birthday

KUCHING: Head of State Tun Datuk Patinggi Abang Muhammad Salahuddin turns 92 this year and despite of his age, he does not seem to slow down judging by the number of activities he still attends or officiates at.

Tun Salahuddin, who is the sixth Yang di-Pertua Negeri reassumed office Nov 30, 2011 and is the only son of the late Abang Barieng.

He had worked as a Municipal Inspector until 1947 and also with the National Registration Department and the Public Works Department.

Described as a leader who is always close to the people, he is always seen engaging in small talks and chats with those around him and his friendliness is seen during the recent Hari Raya gathering held at his son-in-law’s house in Sibu where he joked and chat heartily with his family members.

Today, more than 4, 000 people from the various uniformed and non-uniformed contingents and performers will entertain the huge crowd expected at the State Stadium in conjunction with his 92th birthday bash starting at 8am.

Organised by the Ministry of Social Development, the performances will feature dances, medley of songs and other interesting acts.

Upon arrival, Tun Salahuddin and his wife, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Norkiah will be received by Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and wife Puan Sri Ragad Kurdi Taib, minister in charge of the celebrations, Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh, State Secretary Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohd Morshidi Abdul Ghani, State Armed Forces Chief and other committee members.

His Excellency will inspect a guard- of- honour mounted by 92 contingents before they proceed for the parade. Other programme will include the presentation of a special birthday cake and a birthday song by music from the ‘angklung’ performed by children and the Chief Minister’s address to the crowd.
