Unimas and IUFRO hosting special education session on Oct 2

KUCHING: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) in partnership with the International Union of Forest Research Organisations (IUFRO) is hosting the Forest and Ecosystem Science Education Special Session on Oct 2.

The event will start at 9am to 12.30pm at Dewan Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra (DeTAR Putra) and from 1pm to 5pm at Semenggoh Wildlife Centre.

The session will highlight the importance and recent developments of global, local and national education in the field of forestry, forest ecosystem science including forest products and wood science.

It is part of the World Conference on Science and Technology Education (WorldSTE) 2013.

The main feature of the session includes prominent guest speakers such as Professor Dr Yoon Soo Kim of Chonnam National University, South Korea; Professor Dr Awang Noor Abd Ghani of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM); Associate Professor Dr Andrew Wong Han Hoy of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) and IUFRO; Siti Hanim Sahri of Timber Research and Technical Training Centre, Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) and Cynthia Chin of World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Malaysia.

The afternoon session includes a field visit to the forest sites and Orang Utan rehabilition centre at Semenggoh. This reflect the need of forest science education to focus on the emerging and current global issues and climate change impacting on forest resource management, forest governance, forest biodiversity and conservation, forest ecosystem services, forest biomass and bioenergy, soil and water relations, as well as the role of forests for people.
