KAPIT: SJK Hock Lam pupils Irene Mok, Angela Kong and Celestine Wong have swept the top three prizes of the Lions Club Peace Poster Contest for Kapit district.

Pupils from 11 primary schools took part in the annual contest on Tuesday, with fourth to 10th prize going to Danny Juti (SK Nanga Bena), Syaireen Balan (SK Ulu Yong), Marvin Randai Aik (SK Ulu Yong), Cristino Layang (SK Ulu Yong), Colostus Sanggai Balang (SK Nanga Bena), Rohit Isa (SK Nanga Bena) and Jonardi Diana.

Lions Club of Kapit president Tiong Ping said the contest encourages children to creatively express what peace means to them.

“This year, the contest’s theme is ‘Our World, Our Future’. The contest allows pupils to share their unique image with others, so that we may have greater tolerance and international understanding,” he said.

Tiong said Lions believe that the love of peace should be cultivated and nurtured from an early age.

Each of the schools involved held their own contests and the top three posters from each school were sent for the club-level competition.

Mok’s winning poster will be sent to the district governor for another round of competition and the winning poster from there would go on to national and subsequently international level.

The international grand prize is US$5,000 and an award.

In addition, the grand prize winner and two family members along with the sponsoring club president will attend the awards ceremony during Lions Day with the United Nations.

A total of 23 merit award winners will also receive US$500 each and a certificate of achievement.
