Single mother seeks reinstatement of aid

KUCHING: A single mother in Sri Aman, who has two children — one of whom is disabled, is requesting the Welfare Department reinstate monthly aid for the family.

Sharifah Habsah Wan Otheman, originally from Simunjan, currently does odd-jobs which is not enough to support her family.

Her ex-husband, who left the family years ago, only gives money to them when she begs from him.

She called on Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak vice-chairman Leon Jimat Donald on Monday together with her disabled son Wan Hamizan.

Leon said Wan Hamizan’s monthly disability aid of RM100 stopped in May, while Sharifah Habsah’s request for single mother’s aid was declined.

“The mother claimed to have exhausted all avenues to request for help from the Welfare Department since both their applications were rejected by the department’s officers.

“In my opinion, we should not ignore her case. Please give consideration, in order to ease their burden,” he said yesterday

Leon added that he would write to the Welfare Department in Sri Aman regarding Sharifah Habsah and Wan Hamizan.

“I will also write to the Welfare, Women and Family Development Minister Datuk Fatimah Abdullah urging her to help them,” he said.
