Independent rep will not sustain people’s support — Analyst

KUALA LUMPUR: A state or parliamentary assemblyman who quits his party and declares himself as an independent representative will not sustain the support of his constituents, according to a political analyst.

Prof Datuk Dr Zainal Kling told Bernama yesterday that it was through party backing and funds that the representative was able to maintain the support of the people.

“His position is stronger when he is with the party as he can help resolve issues for his constituents through party funds.

“As an independent with no party support and limited funds, his chances of retaining the seat in the next general election would be very slim,” he opined.

Zainal was asked to comment on Luyang (Sabah) DAP state assemblyman Hiew King Cheu’s decision to quit the party and remain as an independent.

The seasoned politician who also resigned as the party’s state liaison committee adviser some weeks ago had indicated that he would not be joining any party.

Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall CEO Tang Ah Chai was of the view that the people’s continuous support for their representative depended on his performance.

“An independent representative might not be able to sustain through the next general election but if he had performed excellently as their representative, he could still secure their favour,” he said.  — Bernama
